Introduction

There is/are — выражения, используемые в предложениях, чтобы подтверждать, отрицать или проверять факт существования чего-то.

Form

В предложении с there is/are субъект находится после глагола, и чаще всегда используются следующие три формулы:

Утвердительная форма

Сущ. ед. ч.: There is + singular noun/uncountable noun + …
Сущ. мн. ч.: There are + plural noun + …

Отрицательная форма

Сущ. ед. ч.: There is + not + singular noun/uncountable noun + …
Сущ. мн. ч.: There are + not + plural noun + …

Сокращённые отрицания: there isn’t/aren’t (такие же, как to be).

Более часто используемые сокращённые отрицания — there are no/there aren’t или there are not any/there aren’t any.

Вопросительная форма

Сущ. ед. ч.: Is there + singular noun/uncountable noun + …?
Сущ. в мн. ч.: Are there + plural noun + …?

Example

There is

  • There is a cat in the garden.
  • There is not a cat in the garden.
  • There isn’t a cat in the garden.
  • Is there a cat in the garden?

There are

  • There are ten cats in the garden.
  • There are not ten cats in the garden.
  • There aren’t ten cats in the garden.
  • Are there ten cats in the garden?
  • There are not any cats in the garden.

Use

There is/are являются выражениями, которые используются в предложениях, чтобы подтвердить, опровергнуть или проверить существование чего-то.

Summary

There is/are используются, когда мы хотим подтвердить (утвердительная [affirmative] форма), опровергнуть (отрицательная [negative] форма) или проверить (вопросительная [interrogative] форма) факт существования чего-то.

  • Единственное число: there is
  • Множественное число: there are

Например:

— Утвердительная форма: “There is a plate on the table.” / “There are plates on the table.“
— Отрицательная форма: “There isn’t a plate on the table.” / “There aren’tplates on the table.”
— Вопросительная форма: “Is there a plate on the table?“ / “Are thereplates on the table?”

Часто встречаемые отрицательные формы [negative forms]: there is no/there are no.

Например:

— “There is no plate on the table.” / “There are no plates on the table.”
