Introduction

Los pronombres [pronouns] son palabras utilizadas para evitar repeticiones de un sustantivo {ver Pronombres Personales Subjeto, Nivel A1}.

Se utilizan los pronombres relativos [relative pronouns] para introducir las cláusulas relativas. Se refieren a lugar y tiempo al reemplazar el sujeto expresado en la cláusula principal para evitar su repetición en las cláusulas relativas {ver Pronombres Relativos, Nivel A1}.

Form

Los principales pronombres relativos de lugar y tiempo son where, when, wherever y whenever.

Example

Where

  • This is the shopping centre where I bought a gift for my mom.
  • It is the butcher’s where my brother worked.
  • This is the hotel where we stayed during our trip.

When

  • I can’t forget the day when my dad opened our bakery.
  • The winter when I started working as a shop assistant was cold.
  • The day when the hairdresser died was my birthday.

Wherever

  • Wherever you go, I’ll be there for you.
  • We can have dinner wherever you want, but not in that restaurant.
  • I am ready to study wherever my parents decide.

Whenever

  • Whenever you need me, I am ready to come.
  • You can read it today or whenever.
  • Whenever the boss calls, she is busy.

Use

Se utilizan wherewhen para introducir cláusulas relativas. Usamos:

  • Where para descubrir el lugar de la acción descrita en una oración;
  • When para descubrir el tiempo de la acción descrita en una oración;
  • Wherever para indicar que el lugar no importa;
  • Whenever para indicar que el tiempo no importa.

Summary

Usamos los pronombres relativos de lugar y tiempo para introducir clausulas y evitar la repetición de lugares o tiempos que aparecen en la cláusula principal se repitan en la cláusula relativa. Se colocan después de sustantivos.

Los pronombre relativos de lugar y tiempo más comunes son: where (objeto) se usa para indicar lugares, when se usa para indicar tiempo, wherever se usa cuando no importa el dónde, whenerver se usas cuando no importa cuándo ocurrirá una acción o un evento.

Por ejemplo:
— “I work in London, where 8 million people live.” = Where se refiere a Londres (lugar).
— “I work in London last summer, when you were in the countryside.” = When se refiere al periodo de trabajar en Londres (tiempo).
