Introduction
Modal Fiiller [Modal Verbs] kendi başlarına anlamları olmayan fakat cümlede ana eylemi niteleyerek anlamını değiştiren ve eylem hakkında ek bilgi sağlayan yardımcı fiillerdir.
Ought to öneriler ve tavsiyeler aracılığıyla zorunluluklara ve görevlere işaret ederler. “Must” kadar güçlü bir zorunluluk belirtmemektedir. “Should” ifadesine çok benzer fakat daha az kullanılır. Yapısal olarak birbirlerinden çok farklıdırlar.
Form
Ought to fiili üçüncü tekil kişi için bile aynıdır ve üç halde bulunur.

Ought to fiili ile olumlu halde cümle kurmak istediğimizde:

- You ought to get the diploma soon.
Tavsiye
- You ought to work out more.
- He oughtn’t to memorise the rule, it’s better to understand it.

Use
Ought must kadar güçlü bir zorunluluk belirtmez. Ought fiilini aşağıdaki durumlarda kullanırız.
- Birisine bir şey önerirken veya öneri istediğimizde;
- Yapılması gereken bir zorunluluk ya da görev olduğunda.

Ought to tavsiyeler ve öneriler aracılığıyla zorunluluklardan ve görevlerden bahsetmek için kullanılan yardımcı modal fiilleridir [Modal Verbs].
Cümle formülleri aşağıdaki gibidir:
- Olumlu: Özne + ought to + fiil + …
- Olumsuz: Özne + ought + not + to + fiil + …
- Soru: Ought + özne + to + fiil + …?
Örnek:
— Olumlu: “You ought to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Olumlu, Öneride bulunurken;
— Olumsuz: “You oughtn´t to do your homework to understand the subject.” =Olumsuz, öneride bulunurken;
— Soru: “Ought you to do your homework to understand the subject?” = Soru, onay ya da öneri isterken;
“You must do your homework or you will fail the class.” = Must daha güçlü bir zorunluluk belirtir.
