Form

To be is an irregular verb and, in the negative form, it has this structure:
Subject + to be + not + …

Subject To Be + not
I am not
You are not
He is not
She is not
It is not
We are not
You are not
They are not

We use to be as a linking verb between other classes of words, it gives us more details about the condition of the subject.

To be is used with:

  1. Nouns;
  2. Adjectives;
  3. Prepositional phrases (or complements).

Short form

The short form is used in spoken language or in informal writing.

Subject To Be + not
I I’m not
You You’re not / You aren’t
He He’s not / He isn’t
She She’s not / She isn’t
It It’s not / It isn’t
We We’re not / We aren’t
You You’re not / You aren’t
They They’re not / They aren’t
