Introduction
I sostantivi [nouns] si riferiscono a una persona, un luogo, una cosa, un evento, una sostanza o una qualità.
I sostantivi hanno tre generi [genders]: maschile [masculine], femminile [feminine] e neutro [neutral].
Form
Alcuni sostantivi possono avere parole diverse per i tre generi differenti:
- Maschile, femminile e neutro;
- Maschile e femminile;
- Neutro.
Masculine | Femenine | Neutral |
---|---|---|
boy | girl | child |
father | mother | parent |
husband | wife | spouse |
man | woman | person |
sir | madame | – |
son | daughter | – |
uncle | aunt | – |
– | – | dog |
– | – | dolphin |
– | – | table |
*Possiamo distinguere alcuni sostantivi neutri aggiungendo il maschile o il femminile.
Solitamente usiamo he (maschile) e she (femminile) per le persone, tuttavia usiamo it (neutro) per cose e animali (a parte gli animali domestici quando sono considerati intelligenti o con dei sentimenti, con i quali possiamo usare he o she).
Example
Parole che hanno la forma maschile, femminile e neutra:
- Our boy likes football. He plays it every day.
- Our girl likes football. She plays it every day.
- Our child likes football. They* play it every day.
Parole che hanno sia la forma maschile che femminile:
- My uncle doesn’t eat meat. He is a vegetarian.
- My aunt doesn’t eat meat. She is a vegetarian.
Parole che hanno solo la forma neutra:
- The table is 500 euros. It is expensive.
- The dog is 10 kilos. It is heavy.
- The female dog is 10 kilos. She is heavy.
*We can use they as a neutral third person singular pronoun when we don’t know or don’t want to reveal someone’s gender.
Use
Usiamo i sostantivi di genere maschile e femminile per persone di sesso maschile o femminile, e di genere neutro per cose, animali, eventi, sostanze o qualità.
Summary
I sostantivi [nouns] hanno tre generi [genders]: maschile [masculine], femminile [feminine], e neutro [neutral].
Di solito usiamo he e she per persone, tuttavia usiamo it per cose o animali (possiamo usare he o she per animali domestici).
Per esempio:
— “My father doesn’t eat meat. He is a vegetarian.” = Usiamo he perché father è maschile.
— “My mother doesn’t eat meat. She is a vegetarian.” = Usiamo she perché mother è femminile.
— “My parents don’t eat meat. They are vegetarian.” = Usiamo they perché parents si riferisce ad entrambi (father e mother).
— “The cat sleeps during the day. It is so cute.” / “The female cat sleeps during the day. She is so cute.” = Possiamo usare it o she perché è un animale domestico di sesso femminile.
