I sintagmi preposizionali [prepositional phrases] sono il risultato della combinazione delle preposizioni con altri elementi della frase (sostantivi, pronomi, gerundi…).
Form
Il sintagma preposizionale é formato da una preposizione con un altro elemento (nome, pronome, gerundio…) della frase.
I sintagmi preposizionali hanno queste strutture:
- Preposizione + nome: at, under and on.
- Preposizione + pronome: with, to and from.
- Preposizione + gerundio: without, after and before.
Example
Preposizione + nome
- She works at home.
- The meeting is at 7, I hope that she arrives on time.
- The shop is under the bridge.
Preposizione + pronome
- I received the information from him.
- I am telling this to everybody.
- You can come to the supermarket with me.
Preposizione + gerundio
- I always go to work after watching television.
- I usually eat breakfast before going to school.
- He left the house without listening to his mum.
Use
In una frase il sintagma preposizionale é usato in diversi modi.
- Come aggettivo (risponde alla domanda Which one?);
- Come avverbio di tempo e luogo (risponde a domande come How? When? o Where?);
- Come frase nominale;
- Con verbi dal doppio oggetto.
