Introduction
To be è un verbo ausiliare ed è essenziale in grammatica.
Quando è usato nella sua forma negativa, il verbo nega qualcosa riguardo il soggetto.
Form
To be è un verbo irregolare e, nella forma negativa, ha la seguente struttura:

- I am not a student.
- He is not a lawyer.
- We are not doctors.
- Aggettivi
- I am not tall.
- He is not polite.

- Sintagmi preposizionali (o complementi)
- My book is not on the bed.
- Harry Potter is not on the TV.
- The eggs are not in the box.
To be, nella forma negativa, può essere usato anche in forma contratta:
- You aren’t 12 years old.
- This coat isn’t $100.
- Standard double beds aren’t 5 feet wide.
Use
To be ha una struttura molto semplice, e quando viene usato per collegare diverse categorie di parole (soggetti, nomi, aggettivi, complementi…), ci dà più informazioni sulle condizioni del soggetto.
To be viene usato con:
- Sostantivi;
- Aggettivi;
- Sintagmi preposizionali (o complementi).
To be, nella sua forma negativa, è usato per negare caratteristiche del soggetto, per esempio: età, comportamento, colore, mestiere, nazionalità, personalità, luogo, prezzo, qualità, dimensione, tempo…
