Il Passato Progressivo Affermativo

Introduction

Il passato progressivo [past continuous or progressive] è usato per parlare di situazioni che si sono verificate nel passato ed erano in progresso in ogni momento lungo un certo periodo di tempo.

Espresso in forma affermativa, il verbo conferma che qualcosa stava succedendo in un periodo di tempo nel passato.

Form

Il passato progressivo, alla forma affermativa, ha questa struttura:
Subject + was/were + [verb + -ing] + …

  • Was/were: past simple of the verb to be.
Subject was/were Verb + -ing
I was working
You were working
He/She/It was working
We/You/They were working

Example

  1. Lunga azione interrotta da una più breve
    • I was running in the park when you sent me that message.
    • She was doing sport when I called her.
    • They were watching TV when she got back from work.
  2. Evento che accade in un momento esatto del passato
    • It was 9 o’ clock when I was running in the park.
    • I called her at 11:45 and she was doing sport.
    • She returned from work at 7 o’ clock and they were still watching TV.
  3. Azione ininterrotta in svolgimento da tempo
    • I was running.
    • He was crossing the road.
    • We were watching TV during our break.
  4. Lunghezza di un periodo di tempo nel passato
    • I was working in the bakery last summer.
    • She was doing sports every day last year.
    • They were watching TV all day when they were young.
  5. Azioni simultanee passate
    • I was running while she was walking.
    • She was doing sport while her mother was cooking.
    • We were talking while the kids were watching TV.
  6. Sequenza di azioni svoltesi nel passato
    • I went to the park, the kids were playing on the grass, their parents were sitting on the fence and some teenagers were running.
    • She went home and her mother was working on the laptop, her father was watching tv and her sister was studying.
    • We went to the doctor today and while waiting, some patients were reading magazines, some were talking on the phone and the secretary was typing on the computer.
  7. Azione ripetuta o fastidiosa (con always)
    • I was always going to class late.
    • She was doing sports every day for years to become a good athlete.
    • They were always watching TV on high volume late at night.

Use

Usiamo il passato progressivo, nella forma affermativa, per parlare di eventi o attività che si verificano nel passato. Di solito sottolineamo il fatto che sono durati per molto tempo.

Il passato progressivo viene usato nei seguenti casi:

  1. Una lunga azione di background interrotta inaspettatamente da una più breve (qualcosa succede all’improvviso mentre un evento più lungo si stava svolgendo);
  2. Un evento che si stava svolgendo in un momento preciso nel passato (esprime una data, ora, o dà informazioni sull’orario in cui qualcosa stava accadendo in un momento esatto del passato);
  3. Un’azione ininterrotta in svolgimento da tempo (evento in svolgimento nel passato lungo un periodo di tempo esteso);
  4. La lunghezza di un periodo di tempo nel passato (evento in svolgimento nel passato lungo un periodo di tempo esteso);
  5. Azioni simultanee passate (qualcosa accade allo stesso tempo in cui stava accadendo qualcos’altro);
  6. Sequenza di azioni svoltesi nel passato (usato per descrivere situazioni in cui diversi eventi si verificano allo stesso tempo);
  7. Azione ripetuta o fastidiosa (con “always” o espressioni simili che indicano l’idea di un evento ripetuto).

Summary

Usiamo il passato progressivo, nella forma affermativa, quando parliamo di situazioni avvenute nel passato ed erano in svolgimento tutto il tempo lungo un periodo.

La struttura è:
Subject + was/were + [verb + -ing] + …

Per esempio:
—”I was playing football when the phone rang.” = Nella prima parte della frase usiamo il passato progressivo per parlare di una situazione in atto, considerata un’azione di sottofondo, interrotta da un’azione improvvisa (espressa con il passato semplice).
♦ “I played football.” = Usiamo il passato semplice per esprimere un’azione che è iniziata e finita nel passato.
