I Phrasal Verbs

Introduction

Un Phrasal Verb è un verbo formato da due parti, da un verbo e da una particella. Questa particella, in genere, dà ai verbi un significato completamente nuovo.

Form

Un Phrasal Verb ha due parti: la prima parte é chimata base del verbo; la seconda parte consiste in un avverbio o una preposizione che segue la base.

Le frasi contenenti i phrasal verbs di solito hanno la seguente struttura:
… + verb + object + preposition/adverb + …
… + verb + preposition/adverb + object + …

Ci sono alcune regole:

  • Alcuni phrasal verbs sono transitivi, che significa che sono seguiti da un oggetto;
  • Alcuni phrasal verbs sono intransitivi, quindi non sono seguiti da un oggetto;
  • Mentre alcuni phrasal verbs si possono separare e l’oggetto puó andare nel mezzo, altri non lo sono.

I piú comunemente usati sono: come in, get up, look for, switch off…

Example

  • I have to look for the grammar book.
  • Come in. The door is open.
  • Can you switch the light off, please?
    Get up now. It’s 12 a.m.!

Use

I Phrasal Verbs sono brevi parole formate da un verbo e da una particella.

Hanno solitamente un significato completamente diverso da quello del verbo. I Phrasal Verbs piú comuni sono illustrati sopra.

  1. Break up: End a relationship;
  2. Break out: Escape;
  3. Break down: Stop working;
  4. Come back: Return;
  5. Come across: Seem to be or meet by coincidence;
  6. Come up: Be mentioned;
  7. Look after: Take care of something or somebody;
  8. Look for: Search for;
  9. Look up: Respect;
  10. Look out: Be careful;
  11. Look forward: Wait for something with excitement;
  12. Put off: Postpone;
  13. Put down: Place something on the table/floor;
  14. Put up with: Tolerate;
  15. Take off: Remove a piece of clothing;
  16. Take after: Follow somebody as an example;
  17. Take back: Return.
