Introduction

The dot mark has got three names (a dot, a full stop, a point) and several usages according to each subtype.

Form

The mark ‘.‘ has different names, according to where it is used.

  • Dot
  • Point
  • Full stop

Example

  • after the location in letters and documents
    • England, 2016
    • Warsaw, 1975
    • Spain, 2020
  • in headlines
    • Britons want total EU exit
    • Titanic sinks
    • Headless body in topless bar
  • in book titles
    • Harry Potter
    • The Mona Lisa
    • Animal Farm

Use

We don’t use the ‘.’ mark:

  • after the location in letters and documents: we use a comma instead
  • in headlines
  • in book titles
