Introduction
Adverbs are words that function as modifiers of sentences, clauses or various elements of clauses. They can provide a wide range of information.
Adverbs of degree are used to provide information about the intensity of an action or adjective.
Form
Adverbs of degree are usually positioned after the auxiliary verbs to be or to have and before other verbs.
Their positions are:
Subject + be/have + adverb + …
Subject + adverb + verb + …
The main adverbs of degree are: almost, extremely, fully, quite, too and very.
In some cases these adverbs can be formed by adding -ly to adjectives: extreme ⇒ extremely, full ⇒ fully.
Example
- Your dinner is almost ready.
- I have an extremely busy schedule.
- Our office is fully furnished.
- This job is quite interesting.
- Her dress was too small for me.
- She likes Italy very much.
Use
We use adverbs of degree when we show the intensity of an action, adjective or another adverb.
The main adverbs of degree are:
- Almost (nearly, not yet);
- Extremely (to a very great degree);
- Fully (no less or fewer than);
- Quite (enough);
- Too (more than it should be);
- Very (in a high degree).
