Advertising

Introduction

Conjunctions are words that function as a link between different clauses or elements in sentence.

Form

Conjunctions are words that connect words, phrases and clauses in a sentence.
The main conjunctions are: and, but, because and when.

The structure of the sentence is:
Clause 1 + conjunctions + clause 2

If the sentence is longer we put comma (,) before the conjunction.

Example

And

  • Kevin reads the newspaper and watches television every Friday.
  • They live in New York and love its beautiful library.

But

  • I like maths lessons but I don’t really like history lessons.
  • You can go hiking there but you have to be very careful.

Because

  • Anna doesn’t want to take the exam because she did not study.
  • We can’t come to the party tonight because we must study.

When

  • You get very tired when you don’t sleep.
  • We came from school when nobody was home.

Use

Conjunctions are used to connect words, phrases, clauses and sentences and show relations between them.

We can combine the clauses in different ways:

  • And: it connects two sentences (addition);
  • But: it states either a condition or a contrast (contrast);
  • Because: it states the reason (cause);
  • When: it states the time of the sentences (time).

Summary

Conjunctions act as a link between words, phrases, clauses and sentence.

The main conjunctions are: and, but, because and when. The conjuctions are used between clauses.

For example:

— “I need to go to the supermarket but I have to work.” = But is used to express an action that is in contrast with another action at the same time.

— “I need to go to the supermarket when I finish work.” = When is used to express the new action after the first one is already finished.
