Introduction

The future is the tense used to express future events. We use the future simple structure to introduce predictions, beliefs or intentions about the future.

When expressed in its affirmative form, the verb confirms something about the subject.

Form

The future simple, in its affirmative form, has this structure:
Subject + will + verb + …

Subject will Verb
I/You/He/She/It will work
We/You/They will work

Short versions of the affirmative form are: I’ll – you’ll – he’ll…

Example

Promises

  • will be there, I promise!
  • She promises she will wear a bikini.
  • We will tell you if he shows up.

Spontaneous decisions

  • I’m cold, I will put my gloves on!
  • Sure, he’ll come tonight.
  • No worries, they’ll call you back.

Hopes/opinions/predictions

  • I think she will pay with cash.
  • In my opinion, they will buy this business.

  • will get my degree once I pass my exams.

Use

We use future simple, in its affirmative form to:

  1. Make promises;
  2. Make spontaneous decisions;
  3. Express hopes, opinions or predictions;
  4. To express facts that always happen.

Summary

We use the future simple, in the affirmative form, to confirm predictions, beliefs, intentions or facts about the future.

When we use future simple in its affirmative form, we start with the subject followed by will and the base form of the verb.

For example:
— “We will work on important projects next month.” = The sentence is in the future simple affirmative, so we use will before the base form of the verb to work (will work).
♦ “We work on important projects.” = The sentence is in the present simple affirmative, so we use the base form of the verb to work (work).
