Introduction

The letter d is usually pronounced as /d/, but also as other different sounds.

D can be pronounced as:

Example

  • /d/:
    • day;
    • dog;
    • dream.
  • /dʒ/:
    • gradual;
    • graduate;
    • graduation.
  • Silent d:
    • handsome;
    • Wednesday;
    • pledge

Use

D is pronounced as /dʒ/:

  • When there is a vowel followed by -du.

Silent d:

  • When appears before n and g (-dn);
  • Some common words: handsome, handkerchief, sandwich.
