Introduction

The letter t is pronounced differently depending the letters following it in the word.

    • ten;
    • top;
    • try.
  2. /ʃ/:
    • education;
    • question;
    • rational.
  3. /tʃ/:
    • culture;

  4. /ʒ/:
    • equation.
  5. silent:
    • Christmas;
    • fasten;
    • whistle.

Use

T is pronounced as /t/ commonly

T is pronounced as /ʃ/: when t precedes -ion.

  • Exception: equation – which is pronounced as /ʒ/

T is pronounced as /tʃ/when t precedes ure, creating therefore a long u sound.

T is silent: 

  • Endings as -sten, -ften, -stle;
  • If t is between two other consonant sounds – it becomes silent because requires a lot of effort to pronounce the letter,
