Introduction

Pronouns are words used to avoid repetitions of a noun.

Object pronouns are pronouns which are used as an object of a verb or a preposition or as replacement for objects to avoid repetitions.

Form

Pronouns and object pronouns have their number (singular, plural) and gender (masculine, feminine, neutral). If there are prepositions in a sentence, we put the object pronouns after them.

Object pronouns are:

Subject Pronouns Object Pronouns
I Me
You You
He Him
She Her
It It
We Us
You You
They Them

In informal conversations, they can be used as short answers.

Example

  1. Avoid repetitions
    • I’m a very calm person but my brother always drives me mad.
    • My daughter is 7 years old. I take her to school every day.
    • They have 3 children. They take them to the park every weekend.
  2. After prepositions
    • Don’t look at me!
    • This is for you.
    • I talk to them every day.

Use

We use an object pronoun:

  1. To avoid repeating the same subject pronoun or noun;
  2. In sentences after prepositions.

Summary

Object pronouns are used to express what is affected by the subject, but they can also be used to avoid repetitions. They differ in gender and number, and are placed after verbs.

They are: me, you, him, her, it, us, you and them.

For example:
— “My dogs get very happy when I take them to the park.”  = Them refers to my dogs.
— “I gave him a kiss for you.” = Him is used instead of the person’s name after the verb.
