Dot
Introduction
The ‘.‘ mark has got three names (a dot, a full stop, a point) and several usages according to each name.
Form
The mark ‘.‘ has different names, according to where it is used.
- Dot
- Point
- Full stop
Example
- in computing
- example@gmail.com
- youtube.com
- www.wikipedia.org
- in abbreviations and acronyms
- U.S.A.
- etc.
Use
We use a dot:
-
- in computing: between the elements in folder names, codes and website addresses, normally before ‘com’ or ‘org’;
- In abbreviations after the last letter;
- in acronyms after every letter (Only if necessary. Most acronyms do not have dots).
