Introduction

The dot mark has got three names (a dot, a full stop, a point) and several usages according to each subtype.

Here we are focusing on the usage of the dot only.

Form

The mark ‘.‘ has different names, according to where it is used.

  • Dot
  • Point
  • Full stop

Example

  • in computing
    • example@gmail.com
    • youtube.com
    • www.wikipedia.org
  • in abbreviations and acronyms
    • etc.
    • U.S.A.

Use

We use a dot:

    • in computing: between the elements in folder names, codes and website addresses, normally before ‘com’ or ‘org’;
    • In abbreviations after the last letter;
    • in acronyms after every letter (Only if necessary. Most acronyms do not have dots).
