Introduction

The letter y can be pronounced in different ways, depending on which word it is.

Form

The letter Y can be pronounced as:

Uppercase Lowercase Phonetics
Y y /i/
Y y /j/
Y y /ai/

Example

  • As /i/:
    • gym, lyrics, minority;
  • As /j/:
    • yellow, yes, young;
  • As /ai/:
    • cycle, psychology, my.

Use

The letter y that has many sounds.

  • When y is placed in the middle of the word, can have either the /i/ sound or the /ai/ sound;
  • Words ending in -ty use the /i/ sound;
  • When words start with y-, the sound of the letter is /j/.
