Introduction

The letter w corresponds to the sound /w/, it’s a labio-velar approximant.

Form

The letter w can be pronounced as:

  • The letter w always occur before vowel sounds

Example

  • were
  • wax
  • window

Use

Letter w is a labio-velar approximant. To pronounce it, your tongue and lips adopt the same position as for an [u], that is, the tongue is raised high at the back of the mouth and the lips are rounded. The lips will be more or less rounded depending on how open is the next vowel.

  • W is voiced, what means that the vocal cords vibrate when articulating the consonant.
