# Cardinal numbers – spelling

INTRODUCTION

Cardinal numbers give information about how many people or things there are.

FORM

We use a hyphen between tens and unities. We use and between hundreds and tens. We use either the definite article a or one for 100 and 1,000. We separate three digits with a comma. There are a few words for the number zero. We separate three digits with a comma.

• 1,235,355 – one million two hundred thirty-five thousand three hundred fifty-five

USE

We use cardinal numbers to indicate the number or amount of something.
