Introduction

Adverbs [adverbios] modify a verb, adjective or another adverb in a sentence.

Adverbs of manner [adverbios de modo] give specific information about the way/form/mode in which the action is performed.

Form

Adverbs of manner are formed from the feminine singular adjective by adding the suffix -mente.

The following table shows the formation of adverbs of manner:

Adjetivo Femenino singular Sufijo  Adverbio
Estupendo Estupenda mente  Estupendamente
Amable Amable mente Amablemente
Suave Suave mente Suavemente

Example

  • Este programa se entiende estupendamente;
  • Cuando hicimos el curso, el profesor nos volvió a explicar las cosas amablemente;

The adverb of manner:

  • is used to explain how and/or in what way the action of the verb is performed;
  • It answers the question ¿Cómo?

Summary

Adverbs of manner are used to express how the action of the verb is carried out.

In Spanish, they can be created from adjectives by adding the suffix mente; in adjectives ending in -o we change -o into -a.

For example:
— «El viento es muy constante». → «Hace viento constantemente».
