Introduction

Υπάρχουν κάποια ρήματα που πρέπει να ακολουθούνται από γερούνδιο [gerund] ή από απαρέμφατο [infinitive].

Form

Τα παρακάτω ρήματα είναι μερικά από τα οποία ακολουθούνται από Gerund ή από  Infinitive:

  • verbs + gerund [verb + -ing]: admit, avoid, celebrate, dislike, suggest, give up, miss, tolerate…
  • verbs + infinitive [to + verb]: agree, care, decide, hope, manage, pretend, seem, wait…

Example

Verbs + gerund

  • They admitted having separated.
  • He avoided saying his nationality.
  • She celebrated passing her driving test.

Verbs + infinitive

  • We agreed to pay for the end of the year party.
  • She just doesn’t care to be present at the birth.
  • I decided to travel for a year.

Use

Δεν υπάρχει κάποιος κανόνας για να σε βοηθήσει να διαχωρίσεις πότε να χρησιμοποιείς το ένα και πότε το άλλο. Χρειάζεται χρόνο και εξάσκηση για να μάθεις ποια ρήματα ακολουθούνται από Gerunds και ποια ρήματα ακολουθούνται από Infinitive.

Summary

Κάποια ρήματα πρέπει να ακολουθούνται από ένα γερούνδιο [gerund] (ρήματα που λειτουργούν ως ουσιαστικά)  ή από ένα απαρέμφατο [infinitive] (to + ρήμα).

  • Τα πιο κοινά ρήματα που ακολουθούνται από γερούνδιο είναι: admit, avoid, celebrate, dislike, give up, miss, suggest, tolerate…
  • Τα πιο κοινά ρήματα που ακολουθούνται από απαρέμφατο είναι: agree, care, decide, hope, manage, pretend, seem, wait…

Για παράδειγμα:
— “I admit loving you.” = Το ρήμα admit ακολουθείται από γερούνδιο.
— “I decided to marry him.” = Το ρήμα decide ακολουθείται από απαρέμφατο.

ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΗ: Σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις, η σημασία είναι διαφορετική.
