Verbos seguidos por Gerundios e Infinitivos

Introduction
Hay algunos verbos que deben ser seguidos por un gerundio [gerunds] o infinitivo [infinitive].
Form
Algunos verbos se usan con gerundio y otros con infinitivo. No existe una norma para distinguirlos, tienes que aprenderlos de memoria.
Los verbos seguidos por un gerundio (verbos que actúan como sustantivos) o infinitivo (la forma base del verbo que si sigue al to)
- Los verbos + gerundio [verbo + -ing] más comunes son: admit, avoid, celebrate, dislike, suggest, give up, miss, tolerate…
- Los verbos + infinitivo [to + verbo] más comunes son: agree, care, decide, hope, manage, pretend, seem, wait…
Example
Verbos + gerundio
- They admitted making a mistake.
- He avoided paying taxes.
- She celebrated passing her driving test.
Verbos + infinitivo
- We agreed to pay more for the house.
- She just doesn’t care to come tonight.
- I decided to travel for a year.
Use
Usamos verbo + gerundio/infinitivo si queremos seguir un verbo con otra acción.
NOTA: Podemos usar gerundios o infinitivos después de un verbo, pero el significado no será siempre el mismo.
Summary
Es necesario que ciertos verbos vayan seguidos por un gerundio [gerund] (verbos que actúan como sustantivos) o un infinitivo [infinitive] (to + verbo). No hay una norma con relación a este tema, así que hay que aprenderlos de memoria.
- Los verbos seguidos por gerundio más comunes son: admit, avoid, celebrate, dislike, suggest, give up, miss, tolerate…
- Los verbos seguidos por infinitivo más comunes son: agree, care, decide, hope, manage, pretend, seem, wait…
Por ejemplo:
— «I admit loving you.» = El verbo admit es seguido por un gerundio.
— «I decided to marry him.» = El verbo decide es seguido por un infinitivo.
NOTA: En algunos casos el significado cambia.
