Introduction

So that y so…that son dos construcciones diferentes, pero similares que expresan cosas diferentes.

So that recalca las consecuencias de una acción o el propósito. So…that muestra los extremos que llevan a ciertos resultados.

Form

So that (como una cláusula adverbial de resultado) y so…that (como un adverbio de grado) son dos estructuras diferentes pero se puede omitir that en ambos casos.

La estructura de so that es:
Clause 1 + so that + clause 2

La estructura de so… that es:
Clause 1 + so + adjective/adverb + that + clause 2

Example

So that

  • I am going to special classes so that I will become a good IT guy.
  • He is saving money so that he can buy a new laptop.
  • I asked my mom to watch the kids so that we can go to the cinema.

So…that

  • Those PCs had so many viruses that they couldn’t use them.
  • My grandfather is so short that I have to reach the top shelves for him.
  • The car was going so fast that I thought we were going to die.

Use

Normalmente usamos so that (clásula adverbial de resultado) como una construcción que vincula dos oraciones, cuando la segunda oración expresa el resultado o propósito de la primera.

Usamos so…that (adverbio de grado) para crear una comparación entre dos cosas. Se utiliza para recalcar una acción para mostrar que algo lleva a ciertos resultados.

Summary

Usamos la cláusula adverbial de resultado so that para recalcar la consecuencia de una acción o un propósito:
Clause 1 + so that + clause 2

Usamos so…that para crear una comparación entre dos cosas:
Clause 1 + so + adjective/adverb + that + clause 2

Por ejemplo:
— «I will save some money so that I can go on holiday.» = Usamos so that para expresar la consecuencia de ahorrar dinero.
— «I am so rich that I don’t have to save money to go on holiday.» = Usamos so…that para comparar la condición y el resultado.

NOTA: Podemos omitir that en ambas estructuras cuando hablamos.

Vamos a revisar este contenido dentro de la sección {Form}. Echa un vistazo a la sección {Example} que muestra su uso en contexto.
