Introduction

El futuro [future] es el tiempo usado para predecir o expresar eventos del futuro.

Usamos el futuro simple [future simple] para expresar decisiones espontáneas, opiniones y esperanzas {ver Futuro Simple, Nivel A2}.

Usamps be going to para expresar intenciones para el futuro y hacer previsiones basadas en indicios que vemos al momento {ver Be going to, Nivel A1}.

Form

El futuro simple [simple future] (will) y be going to tienen estructuras diferentes para las tres formas.

Formas afirmativas:

  • Futuro simple: Subject + will + verb + …
  • Be going to: Subject + to be + going to + verb + …

Formas negativas:

  • Futuro simple: Subject + will + not + verb + …
  • Be going to: Subject + to be + not + going to + verb + …

Formas interrogativas:

  • Futuro simple: Will + subject + verb + …?
  • Be going to: To be + subject + going to + verb + …?

Example

Futuro simple:

  1. Decisión tomada durante la conversación
    • We don’t have any bread for dinner. I will go and buy some.
  2. Predicciones basadas en opiniones
    • I think this blouse won’t be tight on me.
  3. Invitaciones
    • Will you come with us?
  4. Solicitudes
    • It’s cold. Will you close the window?
  5. Ofertas

  6. Oraciones con: probably, certainly, perhaps
    • I will certainly come to the party.
  7. Promesas
    • I promise I will never do it again!
  8. Necesidad/obligación/eventos futuros
    • You will have to pay with cash if you buy clothes under 50 euros.
  9. Amenazas
    • If you don’t take off my jacket, I will not talk to you again.

Be going to:

  1. Decisión tomada antes del momento de hablar/actividad planificada
    • We don’t have paper for the printer. I am going to get some.
  1. Predicciones, basadas en evidencias, sobre el futuro cercano
    • This business isn’t going to close. They have customers.

Use

  3. Invitaciones;
  4. Solicitudes;
  5. Ofertas;
  6. Oraciones que contienen los adverbios: probably, certainly, perhaps;
  7. Promesas;

Summary

El futuro simple [simple future] (will) y be going to son dos formas del tiempo futuro [future tense], que se diferencian en significado y en forma.

  • Usamos el futuro simple para expresar predicciones, creencias o intenciones sobre el futuro.
  • Usamos be going to para expresas ordenes, predicciones y cosas que están a punto de ocurrir.

Por ejemplo:
— «This printer will probably cost you 70 euros. I heard that it is the usual price.» = No estamos seguros del precio, solo estamos adivinándolo y por eso usamos el futuro simple.
— «This printer is going to cost 70 euros. I checked the price tag.» = Estamos seguros del precio, así que usamos be going to.

NOTA: Ciertas situaciones requieren la estructura be going to, mientras que otras requieren el futuro simple.
