Le futur : « will » ou « be going to » ?

Introduction
Le futur [future] est un temps qui sert à parler d’événement futurs.
Le futur simple [future simple] sert à exprimer des évidences, des opinions et des espoirs {Voir le futur simple, niveau A2}.
On utilise be going to pour exprimer des intentions futures et faire des prévisions basées sur ce que l’on voit au moment où l’on parle {Voir be going to, niveau A1}.
Form
Le futur simple (will) et be going to ont une structure différente pour les trois formes de phrase.
Forme affirmative :
- Futur simple : Sujet + will + verbe + …
- Be going to : Sujet + to be + going to + verbe + …
Forme négative :
- Futur simple : Sujet + will + not + verbe + …
- Be going to : Sujet + to be + not + going to + verbe + …
Forme interrogative :
- Futur simple : Will + sujet + verbe + …?
- Be going to : To be + sujet + going to + verbe + …?

Futur simple
Décisions prises au moment où l’on parle
- We don’t have any bread for dinner. I will go and buy some from the bakery.
Invitations
- Will you come with us to meet the president?
Besoins, devoirs, événements futurs
- You will have to pay with cash if you buy clothes under 50 euros.
Propositions
- I will help you make these photocopies.
Prédictions basées sur une opinion
- He thinks that being retired will be boring.
Promesses
- I promise I will never talk to the boss about this!
Requêtes
- The telephone is ringing. Will you answer it please?
Phrases avec les adverbes probably, certainly, perhaps
- I will certainly come to the party.
- He probably won’t finish writing his CV in time.
- Perhaps we will need a new printer soon. This one is getting so slow.
Menaces
- If you don’t send an email, I will not talk to you again.
Be going to
Décisions prises au moment où l’on parle de planifier une action
- We don’t have paper for the printer. I am going to get some.
Prédictions dans le futur proche basées sur des faits avérés
- This business isn’t going to fail. It’s a multinational corporation!
Use
On emploie le futur simple pour exprimer :
- Une décision prise au moment où l’on parle ;
- Une invitation ;
- Un besoin, un devoir ou un événement futur ;
- Une proposition ;
- Une prédiction basée sur une opinion ;
- Une promesse ;
- Une requête ;
- Formuler une phrase avec les adverbes probably, certainly, perhaps ;
- Une menace.
On emploie be going to pour exprimer :
- Une décision prise au moment où l’on parle de planifier une action ;
- Une prédiction dans le futur proche basée sur des faits avérés.
Summary
Le futur simple (will) et be going to sont deux formes de futur qui n’ont pas le même sens et se construisent différemment.
- On utilise le futur simple pour formuler une prédiction, une hypothèse ou une intention future.
- On utilise be going to pour donner des ordres, faire des prédictions sur des choses qui vont bientôt arriver.
Par exemple :
— « This printer will probably cost you 70 euros. I heard that it is the usual price. » = On n’est pas sûr du prix, ce n’est qu’une estimation, donc on utilise le futur simple.
— « This printer is going to cost 70 euros. I checked the price tag. » = On est sûr du prix donc on utilise be going to.
NOTE : Certaines structures s’emploient toujours avec be going to et d’autres avec le futur simple.
