Introduction
Les questions en wh- [wh- questions] commencent toujours par l’un des pronoms interrogatifs en wh- [interrogative pronouns]. Ils indiquent le genre d’information demandée. {Voir les question en wh- au présent, niveau A1}
Les questions en wh- au passé servent à demander des informations au passé.

Au passé (simple et continu), on utilise les formes passées des auxiliaires et verbes modaux.
Voici la structure d’une question en wh- au passé :
- Avec un auxiliaire :
Pronom interrogatif en wh- + auxiliaire au passé + sujet + verbe +…? - Avec un verbe modal :
Pronom interrogatif en wh- + verbe modal au passé + sujet + verbe + …? - Sans auxiliaire :
What/who + verbe au passé + …?
Which/whose + nom + verbe au passé + …?
Example
- When was the Second World War?
- Where did you live 10 years ago?
- Why did she move to London?
- Which course did you choose?
- What did the director tell you?
- Whose child was that?
- Who ate all the chocolate?
- Whom did he call?
- How did you get there?

Summary
Les questions en wh- [wh- questions] commencent avec un pronom interrogatif en wh- : what, when, where, which, who, whom, whose, why et how.
Ces pronoms interrogatifs introduisent des questions.
Par exemple :
— “Where did you buy this coat?” = Where introduit une question ouverte, on peut y répondre de diverses façons.
♦ “Did you buy this coat in the new shop?” = Les questions fermées impliquent une réponse courte par oui (yes) ou non (no). On les appelle aussi yes or no questions.
NOTE : Un auxiliaire (be, have, do) ou un verbe modal (can, could, would, …) est toujours placé après le pronom interrogatif en wh- et avant le sujet.
