Unit 3.2

Le passé continu – forme affirmative

Advertising

Introduction

Sujet + was/were + [verbe + -ing] + …

  • Was/were : passé simple du verbe to be.
Sujet Was/were Verbe + -ing
I was working
You were working
He/She/It was working
We/You/They were working

Example

  • was running in the park when you sent me that message.
  • She was practicing sport when I called her.
  • They were watching TV when she got back from work.

  • It was 9 o’ clock when I was running in the park.
  • I called her at 11:45 and she was practicing sport.
  • She returned from work at 7 o’ clock and they were still watching TV.

  • was running.
  • He was crossing the road.
  • We were watching TV during our break.

  • was working in the bakery last summer.
  • She was practicing sports every day last year.
  • They were watching TV all day when they were young.

Des actions simultanées passées

  • was running while she was walking.
  • She was practicing sport while her mother was cooking.
  • We were talking while the kids were watching TV.

  • I went to the park, the kids were playing on the grass, their parents were sitting on the fence and some teenagers were running.
  • She went home and her mother was working on the laptop, her father was watching TV and her sister was studying.
  • We went to the doctor today and while waiting, some patients were reading magazines, some were talking on the phone and the secretary was typing on the computer.

Des actions répétitives ou agaçantes (avec always)

  • was always going to class late.
  • She was doing sports every day for years to become a good athlete.
  • They were always watching TV on high volume late at night.

Use

  • Une longue action d’arrière-plan interrompue par une action plus courte (quelque chose se passe soudainement pendant qu’une autre action est déjà en cours) ;
  • Un événement qui se passe à un moment exact dans le passé (on indique une date, une heure ou un élément temporel précis) ;
  • Une action ininterrompue qui dure pendant un moment (un événement qui a lieu sur une période étendue) ;
  • La durée d’une période passée (un événement qui a lieu sur une période étendue) ;
  • Des actions simultanées passées ;
  • Une série d’actions qui se sont produites dans le passé (généralement pour la description d’une situation au cours de laquelle plusieurs événements se sont passés en même temps) ;

Summary

— « I was playing football when the phone rang.
♦ « I played football.
