Unit 3.2

Past continuous v trdilni obliki

Verbs

Subject + was/were + [verb + -ing] + …

  • Was/were: past simple glagola to be.
Subject was/were Verb + -ing
I was working
You were working
He/She/It was working
We/You/They were working
  1. Daljše dogajanje v ozadju, ki ga prekine krajše dejanje
    • I was running in the park when you sent me that message.
    • She was doing sport when I called her.
    • They were watching TV when she got back from work.
    • It was 9 o’ clock when I was running in the park.
    • I called her at 11:45 and she was doing sport.
    • She returned from work at 7 o’ clock and they were still watching TV.
  3. Neprekinjeno dejanje, ki je potekalo nekaj časa
    • I was running.
    • He was crossing the road.
    • We were watching TV during our break.
  4. Dolžina preteklega časovnega obdobja
    • I was working in the bakery last summer.
    • She was doing sports every day last year.
    • They were watching TV all day when they were young.
  5. Pretekla dejanja, ki so potekala hkrati
    • I was running while she was walking.
    • She was doing sport while her mother was cooking.
    • We were talking while the kids were watching TV.
  6. Zaporednost preteklih dejanj
    • I went to the park, the kids were playing on the grass, their parents were sitting on the fence and some teenagers were running.
    • She went home and her mother was working on the laptop, her father was watching tv and her sister was studying.
    • We went to the doctor today and while waiting, some patients were reading magazines, some were talking on the phone and the secretary was typing on the computer.

    • I was always going to class late.
    • She was doing sports every day for years to become a good athlete.
    • They were always watching TV on high volume late at night.

Past continuous uporabljamo v naslednjih primerih:

  1. Daljše dejanje v ozadju, ki ga prekine nepričakovano krajše dejanje (nenadoma se nekaj zgodi, medtem ko drugo daljše dejanje že poteka);
  2. Dogodek, ki je potekal v točno določenem času v preteklosti (izraženi so datum, ura ali specifične informacije o dogodku, ki je potekal v preteklosti);
  3. Neprekinjeno dejanje, ki je potekalo nekaj časa (dogodek, ki je dalj časa potekal v preteklosti);
  4. Dolžina časovnega obdobja v preteklosti (dogodek, ki je dalj časa potekal v preteklosti);
  5. Pretekla istočasna dejanja (dva dogodka sta se zgodila istočasno);
  6. Zaporednost dejanj v preteklosti (ponavadi uporabljamo za opis situacij, v katerih je več dogodkov potekalo istočasno);

Subject + was/were + [verb + -ing] + …

Na primer:
— “I was playing football when the phone rang.”
♦ “I played football.”
