Introduction

Modalni glagol [modal verb] je tip pomožnega glagola, ki sam po sebi nima pomena, ampak modificira glavni glagol, spreminja njegov pomen in dodaja podrobnosti o dejanju.

Ought to je tip pomožnnega glagola, ki ga uporabljamo za izražanje obvez in dolžnosti preko nasvetov in priporočil.

Form

Ought to ima v tretji osebi ednine vedno enako obliko. To strukturo najdemo v treh oblikah.

Affirmative

Njegova struktura v trdilni obliki je:
Subject + ought to + verb + …

Subject ought to Verb
I/You ought to work
He/She/It ought to work
We/You/They ought to work

Negative

Njegova struktura v nikalni obliki je:
Subject + ought + not + to + verb + …

  • Kratka verzija nikalne oblike je: oughtn’t.
Subject ought to + not Verb
I/You ought not to work
He/She/It ought not to work
We/You/They ought not to work

Interrogative

Njegova struktura v vprašalni obliki je:
Ought + subject + to + verb + …?

Example

Šibkejša obveza/dolžnost

  • You ought to apologise.
  • Smoking oughtn’t to be allowed at school.
  • You ought to get the diploma soon.

Nasvet

  • You ought to work out more.
  • He oughtn’t to memorise the rule, it’s better to understand it.
  • Ought we to read the syllabus of the course?

Use

Outght to lahko dojemamo kot šibkejšega od must. Ought to uporabljamo, ko:

  1. Prikazujemo šibkejšo obvezo ali dolžnost;
  2. Dajemo in sprašujemo po nasvetih (priporočilih).

Summary

Modalni glagol [modal verb] ought to izraža obvezo ali nasvet. Lahko ga jemljemo kot manj močnega od must.

Strukture so:

  • Trdilna: Subject + ought to + verb + …
  • Nikalna: Subject + ought + not + to + verb + …
  • Vprašalna: Ought + subject + to + verb + …?

Na primer:
— Trdilna: “You ought to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Ought to uporabljamo za dajanje priporočil.
— Nikalna: “You oughtn´t to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Oughtn’t uporabljamo za dajanje priporočil.
— Vprašalna: “Ought you to do your homework to understand the subject?” = Ought? uporabljamo za spraševanje po potrditvah ali priporočilih.
♦ “You must do your homework or you will fail the class.” = Must izraža močnejšo obvezo.
