Introduction

Czasownik modalny [modal verb}  to rodzaj czasownika pomocniczego, który nie ma żadnego znaczenia sam w sobie, ale modyfikuje znaczenie głównego czasownika i dostarcza więcej informacji.

Ought to to czasownik modalny który wyraża zobowiązanie lub obowiązek przez radę lub polecanie.

Form

Ought to zawsze ma tą samą formę nawet dla trzeciej osoby liczby pojedynczej. Struktura ta występuje w trzech formach.

Twierdzenie

Struktura w formie twierdzącej to:
Subject + ought to + verb + …

SUBJECT OUGHT TO VERB
I/You ought to work
He/She/It ought to work
We/You/They ought to work

Przeczenie

Struktura w formie przeczącej to:
Subject + ought + not + to + verb + …

  • Skrótem formy twierdzącej jest: oughtn’t.
SUBJECT OUGHT TO + NOT VERB
I/You ought not to work
He/She/It ought not to work
We/You/They ought not to work

Pytanie

Struktura formy pytającej to:
Ought + subject + to + verb + …?

Example

  1. Weaker obligation/duty
    • You ought to apologise.
    • Smoking oughtn’t to be allowed at school.
    • You ought to get the diploma soon.
  2. Advice
    • You ought to work out more.
    • He oughtn’t to memorise the rule, it’s better to understand it.
    • Ought we to read the syllabus of the course?

Use

Ought to może być uważane za tak silne jak must. Używamy ought to gdy:

  1. Mówimy o słabszym zobowiązaniu lub obowiązku;
  2. Dajemy i prosimy o radę (polecanie).

Summary

Czasownik modalny ought to wyraża obowiązek obligation lub radę. Może być uważany za nie aż tak silny jak must.

Struktury to:

  • Affirmative: Subject + ought to + verb + …
  • Negative: Subject + ought + not + to + verb + …
  • Interrogative: Ought + subject + to + verb + …?

For example:
— Affirmative: “You ought to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Ought to jest użyte by coś polecić.
— Negative: “You oughtn´t to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Oughtn’t jest użyte by coś polecić.
— Interrogative: “Ought you to do your homework to understand the subject?” = Ought? jest użyte by poprosić o potwierdzenie lub polecenie czegoś
♦ “You must do your homework or you will fail the class.” = Mustex wyraża silniejszy obowiązek.
