Introduction
Verbul modal [modal verb] este tipul de verb auxiliar (ajutător) care nu are înțeles desinestătător, dar care modifică verbul principal, îi schimbă semnificația și-i conferă mai multe detalii despre acțiune.
Ought to (Ar trebui) este un tip de verb modal auxiliar care se folosește pentru a exprima obligația și responsabilitatea prin sfaturi sau recomandări.
Form
Ought to, de obicei, are aceeași formă, chiar și la persoana a treia singular, și găsim această structură în cele trei forme.
Afirmativ
Structura lui, în forma afirmativă [affirmative], este:

Obligație mai lejeră/responsabilitate
- You ought to apologise.
- Smoking oughtn’t be allowed at school.
- You ought to get the diploma soon.
Sfaturi
- You ought to work out more.
- He oughtn’t memorise the rule, it’s better to understand it.
- Ought we to read the syllabus of the course?
Use
Ought to poate fi considerat ca fiind un verb modal nu atât de strict precum e must. Folosim ought to când:
- indicăm o obligație mai lejeră sau o responsabilitate;
- Oferim și cerem sfaturi (recomandări).
Summary
Verbul modal ought to (a trebui) exprimă obligația sau sfatul. Poate fi considerat ca fiind nu atât de strict ca must.
Structurile sunt:
- Afirmativ: Subject + ought to + verb + …
- Negativ: Subject + ought + not + to + verb + …
- Interogativ: Ought + subject + to + verb + …?
De exemplu:
— Afirmativ: “You ought to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Ought to se folosește pentru a oferi o recomandare..
— Negativ: „You oughtn´t to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Oughtn’t se folosește pentru a oferi o recomandare.
— Interogativ: „Ought you to do your homework to understand the subject?” = Ought…? se folosește pentru a cere o confirmare a recomandării.
♦ “You must do your homework or you will fail the class.” = Must exprimă o obligație mai strictă.
