Introduction

Modal Verb je typem pomocného slovesa, které nemá význam samo o sobě, ale modifikuje hlavní sloveso věty a tím mění jeho význam a dodává větě informační hodnotu.

Ought to je pomocné způsobové sloveso, které vyjadřuje povinnosti a závazky skrze rady a doporučení. Takto vyjádřené závazky považujeme za slabší než ty vyjádřené slovesem “must”. Je velmi podobné slovesu Should, ale používá se mnohem méně. Výrazně se liší svým tvarem.

Form

Affirmative

Kladný tvar slovesa Ought má následující formu:
Subject + ought to + verb + …

Subject ought to Verb
I/You ought to work
He/She/It ought to work
We/You/They ought to work

Negative

Záporný tvar slovesa Ought má následující formu:
Subject + ought + not + to + verb + …

Subject ought to + not Verb
I/You ought not to work
He/She/It ought not to work
We/You/They ought not to work

Interrogative

Tázací tvar slovesa Ought má následující formu:
Ought + subject + to + verb + …?

Ought he/she/it to work …?
Ought we/you/they to work …?

*tvar slovesa se nemění ani ve třetí osobě jednotného čísla.

Example

  1. Weaker obligation/duty
    • You ought to apologise.
    • Smoking oughtn’t to be allowed at school.
    • You ought to get the diploma soon.
  2. Advice
    • You ought to work out more.
    • He oughtn’t to memorise the rule, it’s better to understand it.
    • Ought we to read the syllabus of the course?

Use

Ought používáme v následujících případech: (Kladný tvar, Záporný tvar, Tázací tvar):

  1. Doporučení;
  2. Touhy;
  3. Pravděpodobnost;
  4. Ta správná věc.

Pamatujme si, že otázky ve slovesem Ought jsou velice formální. Záporné a tázací tvary se používají jen zřídka.

Ought to je pomocné způsobové sloveso, které vyjadřuje povinnosti a závazky skrze rady a doporučení.

Tyto tvary mají následující formu:

  • Affirmative: Subject + ought to + verb + …
  • Negative: Subject + ought + not + to + verb + …
  • Interrogative: Ought + subject + to + verb + …?

Například:
— „You ought to revise the course after school.“ = Doporučení.
— „I ought to have more time to read.“ = Touha.
— „You ought to find bread in this supermarket.“ = Pravděpodobnost.
— „She ought to stop drinking.“ = Správná věc.

NOTE: *Tvar slovesa se nemění ani ve třetí osobě jednotného čísla.
