Introduction

Un verbo modale [modal verb] è un tipo di verbo ausiliare (aiutante) che non ha un senso di per sé ma modifica il verbo principale, cambia il suo significato e dà più dettagli sull’azione.

Ought to è un tipo di verbo ausiliare modale usato per esprimere obbligo e dovere tramite consigli e raccomandazioni.

Form

Ought to ha sempre la stessa forma anche per la terza persona singolare, e la struttura ha tre forme.

Affirmative

La struttura, nella forma affermativa è:
Subject + ought to + verb + …

Subject ought to Verb
I/You ought to work
He/She/It ought to work
We/You/They ought to work

Negative

La struttura, nella forma negativa è:
Subject + ought + not + to + verb + …

  • La forma breve negativa è: oughtn’t.
Subject ought to + not Verb
I/You ought not to work
He/She/It ought not to work
We/You/They ought not to work

Interrogative

La struttura, nella forma interrogativa è:
Ought + subject + to + verb + …?

Example

  1. Obblighi deboli
    • You ought to apologise.
    • Smoking oughtn’t to be allowed at school.
    • You ought to get the diploma soon.
  2. Consigli
    • You ought to work out more.
    • He oughtn’t to memorise the rule, it’s better to understand it.
    • Ought we to read the syllabus of the course?

Use

Ought to non è considerato forte come must. Lo usiamo quando:

  1. parliamo di obblighi non troppo forti;
  2. diamo e chiediamo consigli (raccomandazioni)

Usiamo il verbo modale [modal verb ought to] per esprimere obbligo e dovere tramite avvisi e richieste. Non è considerato forte come must.

La struttura delle 3 forme di Ought to è:

  • Affirmative: Subject + ought to + verb + …
  • Negative: Subject + ought + not + to + verb + …
  • Interrogative: Ought + subject + to + verb + …?

Per esempio:
— Affermativa: “You ought to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Ought to è usato per dare raccomandazioni.
— Negativa: “You oughtn´t to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Oughtn’t è usato per dare raccomandazioni.
— Interrogativa: “Ought you to do your homework to understand the subject?” = Ought? è usato per chiedere conferma per una raccomandazione.
♦ “You must do your homework or you will fail the class.” = Must esprime un obbligo più forte.
