Introduction

Un verbo modale [modal verb] è un tipo di verbo ausiliare (aiutante) che non ha un senso di per sé ma modifica il verbo principale, cambia il suo significato e dà più dettagli sull’azione.

Could é il passato del verbo modale can. Questi sono dei verbi modali ausiliari usati per sprimere l’idea di abilitá o permesso {vedi Modals of Ability – Can, A1 Level}.

Form

Can/Could hanno sempre la stessa forma, anche per la terza persona singolare. É usato come verbo modale nelle tre forme.

Affirmative

La struttura nella forma affermativa é:
Subject + could + verb + …

Subject could Verb
I/You could work
He/She/It could work
We/You/They could work

Negative

La struttura nella forma negativa é:
Subject + could + not + verb + …

  • La forma breve negativa é: can’t/couldn’t.
Subject could + not Verb
I/You could not work
He/She/It could not work
We/You/They could not work

Interrogative

La struttura nella forma interrogativa é:
Could + subject + verb + …?

Example

  1. Abilitá
    • I can cook very well.
    • I could cook very well when I wanted to (not always).
  2. Offerte cortesi
    • Can I make you dinner?
    • Could I make you dinner?
  3. Richieste cortesi
    • Can you pass me the milk from the fridge?
    • Could you pass me the milk from the fridge, please?
  4. Possibilitá
    • She can rent this flat. She has a good job.
    • She could rent this flat if she finds a job.
  5. Disaprovvazione
    • How can you call the owner without telling me?
    • How could you call the owner without telling me?
  6. Con verbi sensoriali (smell, taste, see, hear, touch…) e processi mentali (think, belive. remember, understand…)
    • The house was in a bad state. I can smell the moisture.
    • The house was in a bad state. I could smell the moisture.

Use

Could è la forma al passato del verbo can, ha quasi lo stesso uso di can ma é meno diretta e piú formale e puó essere usata al passato. Esprime anche disapprovazione eviene usato con i verbi sensoriali e processi mentali. Could puó essere usato al presente per essere piú cortesi. Viene usato per esprimere:

  1. Abilitá;
  2. Offerte in maniera gentile;
  3. Richieste in maniera gentile;
  4. Possibilitá;
  5. Disapprovazione;
  6. Con verbi sensoriali (smell, taste, see, hear, touch…) e processi mentali (think, believe, remember, understand…).

Summary

Usiamo i verbi modali [modal verbs] Can e Could per esprimere abilità, offerte, richieste e possibilitá. Could é usato anche per esprimere disapprovazione, con verbi sensoriali e processi mentali e come forma passata del verbo can.

Le strutture sono:

  • Affirmative: Subject + could + verb + …
  • Negative: Subject + could + not + verb + …
  • Interrogative: Could + subject + verb + …?

Per esempio:
— Affermativa: “Moving could be stressful.“ / “Moving can be stressful.“ = Could esprime che muoversi puó essere strssante, mentre can esprime che lo é la maggiorparte delle volte.
— Negativa: “We couldn´t share a flat!“ / “We can´t share a flat!“ = Could esprime un rifiuto e can esprime impossibilitá.
— Interrogativa: “Could I use the microwave?“ / “Can I use the microwave?“ = Could é usato per chiedere qualcosa in modo gentile.

NOTE: Could non si usa per dare o rifitura un permesso.
