Introduction
Ein Modal Verb ist eine Art von Hilfsverben, das keine eigene Bedeutung hat, aber es modifiziert das Hauptverb, ändert seine Bedeutung und gibt mehr Details über die Handlung.
Can und Could sind Arten von Hilfsmodal Verben, die verwendet werden, um die Idee der Fähigkeit oder Erlaubnis auszudrücken. Could ist die Vergangenheit von Can und die bedingte Form. Deshalb wird Could für die Fähigkeit in der Vergangenheit verwendet, und es wird auch in höflichen Ausdrücken verwendet, die um die Erlaubnis bitten, wenn es als bedingte Form verwendet wird.

Affirmative

Example
Ability
- I can cook very well.
- I could cook very well when I wanted to (not always).
Disapproval
How can you call the owner without telling me?- How could you call the owner without telling me?
Polite offer
- Can I make you dinner?
- Could I make you dinner?
Polite request
- Can you pass me the milk from the fridge?
- Could you pass me the milk from the fridge, please?
Possibility
- She can rent this flat. She has a good job.
- She could rent this flat if she finds a job.
With verbs of the senses and mental processes
- The house was in a bad state.
I can smell the moisture. - The house was in a bad state. I could smell the moisture.
Use
Wir verwenden Can/Could, um Fähigkeit oder Erlaubnis auszudrücken.
Can drückt Fähigkeit oder Erlaubnis im Präsens und Could in der Vergangenheit.
Could ist auch die bedingte Form von Can und wird in höfflige Anfragen verwendet, die um Erlaubnis und Fähigkeit bitten.
