Can oraz Could: czasowniki modalne zdolności

Introduction

Czasownik modalny to taki czasownik pomocniczy, który samodzielnie nie ma znaczenia, natomiast może modyfikować znaczenie głównego czasownika i udzielać dodatkowych informacji na temat czynności.

Could to czas przeszły czasownika  can. Są one rodzajem czasownika pomocniczego używanego by wyrazić idee zdolności lub pozwolenia {zobacz Can: Czasowniki zdolności Poziom A1}.

Form

Can/could zawsze mają tą samą formę, nawet dla trzeciej osoby liczby pojedynczej. Jest używane jako czasownik modalny oraz może być użyte w trzech formach:

Twierdzenie

Struktura formy twierdzącej to:
Subject + could + verb + …

SUBJECT COULD VERB
I/You could work
He/She/It could work
We/You/They could work

Przeczenie

Struktura formy przeczącej to:
Subject + could + not + verb + …

  • Skróty formy negatywnej to: can’t/couldn’t.
SUBJECT COULD + NOT VERB
I/You could not work
He/She/It could not work
We/You/They could not work

Pytanie

Struktura formy pytającej to:
Could + subject + verb + …?

Example

  1. Zdolność
    • I can cook very well.
    • I could cook very well when I wanted to (not always).
  2. Uprzejma propozycja
    • Can I make you dinner?
    • Could I make you dinner?
  3. Uprzejma prośba
    • Can you pass me the milk from the fridge?
    • Could you pass me the milk from the fridge, please?
  4. Możliwość
    • She can rent this flat. She has a good job.
    • She could rent this flat if she finds a job.
  5. Niezadowolenie
    • How can you call the owner without telling me?
    • How could you call the owner without telling me?
  6. With verbs of the senses (smell, taste, see, hear, touch…) and mental processes (think, believe, remember, understand…)
    • The house was in a bad state. I can smell the moisture.
    • The house was in a bad state. I could smell the moisture.

Use

Could jest w przeszłości, bardziej bezpośrednią i uprzejmą formą czasownika can i ma prawie takie samo użycie, ale może odnosić się do przeszłości. Jest także używane by wyrazić niezgodę oraz z czasownikami dotyczącymi zmysłów i procesów myślowych. Możemy użyć could w czasie teraźniejszym by być uprzejmiejszym. Could jest używane by wyrazić

  1. Zdolności;
  2. Uprzejme propozycje;
  3. Uprzejme prośby;
  4. Możliwości;
  5. Niezgodę;
  6. Z czasownikami dotyczacymi zmysłów (smell, taste, see, hear, touch…) i procesy myślowe (think, believe, remember, understand…).

Summary

Czasowniki modalne can oraz could wyrażają zdolność, propozycje, prośby oraz możliwości. Could może być także użyte by wyrazić niezgodę, zmysły oraz procesy myślowe. Jest formą przeszłą czasownika can.

Struktury:

  • Affirmative: Subject + could + verb + …
  • Negative: Subject + could + not + verb + …
  • Interrogative: Could + subject + verb + …?

Na przykład:
— Affirmative: “Moving could be stressful.“ / “Moving can be stressful.“ = Could jest użyte by wyrazić, że poruszanie się mogłoby być czasami stresujące, a can, że może być stresujące zazwyczaj.
— Negative: “We couldn’t share a flat!“ / “We can’t share a flat!“ = Could jest użyte by wyrazić odmowę, a can by wyrazić możliwość.
— Interrogative: “Could I use the microwave?“ / “Can I use the microwave?“ = Could jest użyte by pytać o coś w uprzejmiejszy sposób.

UWAGA: Nie używamy could by dać lub odmówić pozwolenia.
—  “Could I leave early today?” – “Yes, you can”; “No, you can’t.“ / “Yes, you could“; “No, you couldn’t.“
