Introduction

Czasownik modalny [modal verb] jest rodzajem czasownika pomocniczego, który sam w sobie nie ma znaczenia, ale modyfikuje główny czasownik, zmieniając jego znaczenie oraz dając więcej szczegółów na temat czynności.

Must jest rodzajem czasownika modalnego używanego do wyrażenia pewności, konieczności lub silnego zobowiązania, które nie pochodzi z zewnątrz, ale jest osobistą opinią. W formie przeczenia wyraża zakaz.

Form

Must może być wyrażony w trzech formach i nie zmienia się nawet w trzeciej osobie liczby pojedynczej.

Twierdzenia

Struktura w formie twierdzącej to:
Subject + must + verb + …

SUBJECT MUST VERB
I/You must work
He/She/It must work
We/You/They must work

Przeczenia

Struktura w formie przeczącej to:
Subject + must not + verb + …

  • Short form of the negative form is: mustn’t.
SUBJECT MUST + NOT VERB
I/You must not work
He/She/It must not work
We/You/They must not work

Example

  1. Pewność
    • It must be her flat. It’s number 13.
    • This house must be in a good state! They renovated it last year.
    • Must they be rich? They live in a luxury flat in the city center.
  2. Silne zobowiązanie
    • I must search for a new house, my contract ends soon.
    • She must clean the kids’ clothes, they got very dirty at the park.
    • Must we be on time?
  3. Konieczność
    • I must buy a new fridge.
    • He must search for a student flat.
    • Must they paint the walls?
  4. Zakaz (forma przecząca)
    • You must not give your address on online forums!
    • He must not surf the internet while working!
    • You mustn’t smoke in this restaurant.

Use

Używamy must kiedy:

  1. Jesteśmy czegoś prawie pewni i mamy przesłanki, aby tego oczekiwać (forma Twierdząca);
  2. Istnieje silne zobowiązanie (forma twierdząca i pytająca);
  3. Istnieje konieczność (forma twierdząca i pytająca);
  4. Istnieje zakaz (forma przecząca).

Summary

Czasownik modalny must wyraża pewność, silne zobowiązanie, konieczność lub zakaz, który nie pochodzi z zewnątrz. Must może być wyrażone w trzech formach i nie zmienia się nawet w trzeciej osobie liczby pojedynczej.

Struktury to:

  • Twierdzenia: Subject + must + verb + …
  • Przeczenia: Subject + must not + verb + …
  • Pytania: Must + subject + verb + …?

Na przykład:
— Twierdzenia: “must visit my parents soon.” = Podmiot czuje zobowiązanie.
— Przeczenia: “You must not try drugs.” = Wyraża zakaz.
— Pytania: “Must I do it now?” = Podmiot pyta czy musi to zrobić w tym momencie.
