Introduction
Ein Phrasal Verb ist ein zweistimmiges Verb, das durch ein Verb und ein Teilchen gebildet wird.
This particle usually gives verbs a whole new meaning. Dieses Teilchen gibt gewöhnlich Verben eine ganz neue Bedeutung. Es ist gewöhnlich sehr schwer, die Bedeutung eines Phrasal Verb aus den Worten zu verstehen, aus denen es gebildet wird.
Form
Ein Satz, der Phrasal Verb enthält, hat gewöhnlich die folgende Bildung:
… + verb + object + preposition/adverb + …
… + verb + preposition/adverb + object + …
Example
- I have to look for the grammar book.
- Come in. The door is open.
- Can you switch the light off, please?
Get up now. It’s 12 a.m.!
Use
Phrasal Verbs sind kleine Phrasen, die durch ein Verb und ein Teilchen gebildet werden.
Sie haben in der Regel eine ganz andere Bedeutung aus dem ursprünglichen Verb. Die häufigsten Phrasalverben sind oben dargestellt.
- Break up: End a relationship;
- Break out: Escape;
- Break down: Stop working;
- Come back: Return;
- Come across: Seem to be or meet by coincidence;
- Come up: Be mentioned;
- Look after: Take care of something or somebody;
- Look for: Search for;
- Look up: Respect;
- Look out: Be careful;
- Look forward: Wait for something with excitement;
- Put off: Postpone;
- Put down: Place something on the table/floor;
- Put up with: Tolerate;
- Take off: Remove a piece of clothing;
- Take after: Follow somebody as an example;
- Take back: Return.

— „He told his girlfriend to come back.“ = The meaning of the sentence is changed by the Phrasal Verb.
