Introduction
Das Past Continuous oder Progressive ist die Spannung, die man verwendet, um über Situationen zu sprechen, die in der Vergangenheit aufgetreten sind und in jedem Moment während eines Zeitraums in Arbeit waren.
Wenn es in seiner fragenden Form ausgedrückt wird, wird es verwendet, um Fragen über Dinge zu stellen, die in einer vergangenen Zeit geschehen sind.
Form
Das Past Continuous oder Progressive des Verbes to work in der Frageform hat diese Bildung:
Was/Were + subject + [verb + -ing] + …?

Example
Longer background action interrupted by a shorter one
- Was I running in the park when you sent me that message?
- Was she practising sport when I called her?
- Were they watching TV when she got back from work?
Event occurring at an exact time in the past
- Was I running in the park at 9 o’clock?
- Was she practising sport when I called her at 11:45?
- Were they still watching TV when she returned from work at 7 o’clock?
Uninterrupted action in progress for a while
- Was I running?
- Was he crossing the road?
- Were we watching TV during our break?
Length of period of time in the past
- Was I working in the bakery on the opposite road last summer?
- Was she practising sport every day last year to prepare for the race?
- Were they watching TV all day when they were teenagers?
Past simultaneous actions
- Was I running while she was walking?
- Was she practising sport while her mother was cooking?
- Were we talking while the kids were watching TV?
Sequence of actions which occurred in the past
- Were the kids playing on the grass, their parents sitting on the fence and teenagers running when you went to the park?
- Was her mother working on the laptop, her father watching TV and her sister studying when she went home?
- Were the patients reading magazines, talking on the phone and was the secretary typing anything on the computer while you were waiting at the doctor today?
Repeated or annoying action (with always)
- Was I always going late to class?
- Was she doing sport everyday for years to become a good athlete?
- Were they always watching TV on high volume late at night?
Use
Wir verwenden das Past Continuous, um über Ereignisse oder Aktivitäten zu sprechen, die in der Vergangenheit stattfinden. Meistens wollen wir zeigen, dass sie lange gedauert haben.
Das Past Continuous wird in folgenden Fällen verwendet:
- Eine längere Hintergrundaktion, die von einer unerwarteter kürzere unterbrochen wird (etwas passiert plötzlich während ein weiteres längeres Ereignis bereits im Gange war);
- Ein Ereignis, das in einer genauen Zeit in der Vergangenheit aufgetreten ist (das Datum, die Stunde ausdrückt oder spezifische Zeitinformationen über ein Ereignis gibt, das in einer vergangenen Zeit auftritt);
- Eine ununterbrochene Handlung, die eine Weile im Gange ist. (Laufzeit in der Vergangenheit während eines längeren Zeitraums);
- Die Länge der Zeit in der Vergangenheit. (Laufzeit in der Vergangenheit während eines längeren Zeitraums);
- vergangene gleichzeitige Handlungen (etwas geschieht zugleich mit etwas anderem);
- Sequenz von Aktionen in der Vergangenheit aufgetreten (in der Regel verwendet, um eine Situation zu beschreiben, in der verschiedene Ereignisse gleichzeitig geschehen);
- Wiederholte oder ärgerliche Handlung (mit always oder ähnlichen Ausdrücken, die die Idee eines wiederholten Ereignisses vorschlagen).
Summary
Wir verwenden das Past Continuous, wenn wir über Situationen sprechen wollen, die in der Vergangenheit aufgetreten sind und in jedem Moment während eines Zeitraums im Gange war. When used in its Interrogative form, we can use it to form questions about things that were happening in a past period of time.
The Past Continuous in its Interrogative form has this structure:
Was/Were + subject + [verb + -ing] + …? (e.g. Was I playing?).
Zum Beispiel:
—„Was I playing football when the phone rang?“ = Wir verwenden das Past Continuous, um nach einer ununterbrochenen Situation zu fragen, die für eine Weile im Gange war.
