Introduction
Le passé continu ou progressif [past continuous or progressive] est le temps utilisé pour parler d’une situation qui s’est produite dans le passé et s’est prolongée sur une certaine période.
À la forme interrogative, il sert à poser des questions sur des choses qui sont arrivées au sujet pendant une période passée.
Form
Voici la structure du passé continu à la forme interrogative :
Was/Were + sujet + [verbe + -ing] + …?
- Was/were : passé simple du verbe to be.

- Was I running in the park when you sent me that message?
- Was she practicing sport when I called her?
- Were they watching TV when she got back from work?
Un événement qui se passe à un moment exact dans le passé
- Was I running in the park at 9 o’clock?
- Was she practicing sport when I called her at 11:45?
- Were they still watching TV when she returned from work at 7 o’clock?
Une action ininterrompue qui dure pendant un moment
- Was I running?
- Was he crossing the road?
- Were we watching TV during our break?
Action sur une période donnée dans le passé
- Was I working in the bakery on the opposite road last summer?
- Was she practicing sport every day last year to prepare for the race?
- Were they watching TV all day when they were teenagers?
Des actions simultanées passées
- Was I running while she was walking?
- Was she practicing sport while her mother was cooking?
- Were we talking while the kids were watching TV?
Une série d’actions qui se sont produites dans le passé
- Were the kids playing on the grass, their parents sitting on the fence and teenagers running when you went to the park?
- Was her mother working on the laptop, her father watching TV and her sister studying when she went home?
- Were the patients reading magazines, talking on the phone and was the secretary typing anything on the computer while you were waiting at the doctor today?
Des actions répétitives ou agaçantes (avec always)
- Was I always going late to class?
- Was she doing sport everyday for years to become a good athlete?
- Were they always watching TV on high volume late at night?
Use
On utilise le passé continu à la forme interrogative pour s’informer sur :
- Une longue action d’arrière-plan interrompue par une action plus courte (quelque chose se passe soudainement pendant qu’une autre action est déjà en cours) ;
- Un événement qui se passe à un moment exact dans le passé (on indique une date, une heure ou un élément temporel précis) ;
- Une action ininterrompue qui dure pendant un moment (un événement qui a lieu sur une période étendue) ;
- La durée d’une période passée (un événement qui a lieu sur une période étendue) ;
- Des actions simultanées passées ;
- Une série d’actions qui se sont produites dans le passé (généralement pour la description d’une situation au cours de laquelle plusieurs événements se sont passés en même temps) ;
- Des actions répétitives ou agaçantes (avec always ou des expressions similaires qui suggèrent la répétition).
Summary
On utilise le passé continu [past continuous] à la forme interrogative pour s’informer sur une situation qui a eu lieu dans le passé et s’est déroulée sur une certaine période sans discontinuité.
On construit le passé continu à la forme interrogative en commençant avec was ou were, suivi du sujet et du verbe en -ing (la phrase se termine par un point d’interrogation).
Par exemple :
— « Was I playing football when the phone rang? » = On utilise le passé continu pour savoir si une action a été interrompue par le téléphone (when the phone rang).
♦ « Did I play football? » = On utilise le passé simple pour s’informer sur une action qui a commencé et s’est terminée dans le passé.
