Private: L’infinitif de but

Introduction
L’infinitif en to peut s’employer pour exprimer le but (la raison pour laquelle le sujet fait l’action).
Form
Dans l’infinitif de but, le sujet de la proposition principale est la personne qui réalise l’action (exprimée par l’infinitif).
La structure de l’infinitif de but (to work) est la même que celle de l’infinitif en to (to work).
Le but peut s’exprimer avec différente structures : to… / in order to… / so as to…
À la forme négative, on ajoute not avant l’infinitif en to.
Example
- I went outside to help my mom.
I went outside not to help my mom. (to do something else besides helping my mom) - He called me to invite us to the beach.
- We travelled to see our classmates.
- I went outside in order to help my mom.
- I went outside in order not to help my mom. (avoiding to help my mom)
- I went outside in order to understand what my mom says.
- I went outside so as to help my mom.
Use
On emploie l’infinitif de but pour exprimer le but d’une personne. Il renseigne sur les raisons d’une action.
On peut former l’infinitif de but avec ces trois structures qui ont un sens similaire :
- in order to… : plus formel
- so as to… : usage courant
- to… : forme courte des deux autres.
Summary
L’infinitif en to s’utilise pour exprimer le but du sujet.
Différentes structures expriment le but : to…, in order to…, so as to…
À la forme négative, on ajoute not devant l’infinitif en to.
Par exemple :
— « I have to find an excuse to go to the cinema with them. » = Le sujet exprime son objectif d’aller au cinéma.
— « I have to find an excuse not to go to the cinema with them. » = Le sujet exprime son objectif de ne pas aller au cinéma.
NOTE : On emploie in order to et so as to devant les verbes d’état comme appear, have, know, seem, understand… et la forme négative in order not to quand le but est d’éviter quelque chose.
