Introduction
Kita dapat menggunakan struktur to-infinitive untuk menjelaskan tujuan seseorang (alasan atau maksud dari sebuah tindakan).
Form
Struktur to-infinitive (to work) hampir sama dengan struktur zero infinitive (work).
Untuk membentuk format negatif, kita menambahkan not di depan infinitive (not to work).
Example
- I went outside to help my mom, not to help you.
- He called me to invite us to the beach, not to invite us to the picnic.
- We travelled to see my classmates, not to get married.
Use
Kita menggunakan struktur to-infinitive di belakang sejumlah kata kerja, tetapi tidak pernah setelah kata kerja modal. Selain itu, to-infinitive tidak digunakan setelah kata depan (baik dengan atau tanpa to-).
Summary
Struktur to-infinitive dapat digunakan untuk menjelaskan tujuan seseorang. Format negatif dapat dibentuk dengan menambahkan not sebelum to-infinitive.
Contoh:
— “I have to find an excuse to go to the cinema with them.” = Subjek tersebut menyampaikan keinginannya untuk pergi ke bioskop.
— “I have to find an excuse not to go to the cinema with them.” = Subjek tersebut menyampaikan keinginannya untuk tidak pergi ke bioskop.
CATATAN: Struktur ini tidak digunakan setelah kata kerja modal, maupun setelah kata depan (baik dengan atau tanpa to-).
