Introduction
Kata kerja modal [modal verb] adalah salah satu jenis kata bantu kerja yang tidak memiliki arti tersendiri, namun dapat mempengaruhi kata kerja utama, mengubah artinya dan memberikan informasi lebih detail tentang aksi dimaksud.
Ought to adalah kata kerja modal yang digunakan untuk menyampaikan tugas dan kewajiban melalui nasihat atau saran.
Form
Ought to memiliki bentuk penulisan yang sama, termasuk untuk orang ketiga tunggal, dan kita dapat menemukan strukturnya dalam tiga format.
Afirmatif
Struktur dalam format afirmatif adalah:

Nasihat

- He oughtn’t to memorise the rule, it’s better to understand it.
- Ought we to read the syllabus of the course?
Use
Ought to tidak bersifat memaksa seperti must. Kita menggunakan ought to ketika:
- Kita mengindikasikan kewajiban atau tugas yang tidak terlalu mengikat;
- Kita memberikan atau menanyakan nasihat (saran).

Contoh:
— Afirmatif: “You ought to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Ought to digunakan untuk memberikan saran.
— Negatif: “You oughtn´t to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Oughtn’t digunakan untuk memberikan saran.
— Interogatif: “Ought you to do your homework to understand the subject?” = Ought…? digunakan untuk meminta konfirmasi atau saran.
♦ “You must do your homework or you will fail the class.” = Must menunjukkan kewajiban yang mendesak.
