Introduction
Modalni glagol [modal verb] je vrsta pomoćnog glagola koji sam nema značenje, ali može oblikovati glavni glagol tako da mu mijenja značenje i daje više informacija o njegovoj radnji.
Ought to je vrsta pomoćnog modalnog glagola koji se koristi za izricanje obaveze ili dužnosti kroz preporuku.
Form
Ought to je uvijek isti, čak i u trećem licu jednine. Njegovu strukturu nalazimo u tri oblika:
Affirmative
Struktura u potvrdnom obliku:

Use
Outght to nema toliko jako značenje kao must. Koristimo ought to kad:
- Ukazujemo na slabiju obavezu ili dužnost;
- Dajemo ili pitamo za savjet (preporuku).
Summary
Ought to je vrsta pomoćnog modalnog glagola koji se koristi za izricanje obaveze ili dužnosti. Nema toliko jako značenje kao must.
Strukture:
- Potvrdni oblik: Subject + ought to + verb + …
- Negativni oblik: Subject + ought + not + to + verb + …
- Upitni oblik: Ought + subject + to + verb + …?
Naprimjer:
— Potvrdni oblik: “You ought to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Ought to se koristi za davanje preporuke.
— Negativni oblik: “You oughtn´t to do your homework to understand the subject.” = Oughtn’t se koristi za davanje preporuke.
— Upitni oblik: “Ought you to do your homework to understand the subject?” = Ought…? se koristi za pitvrđivanje preporuke.
♦ “You must do your homework or you will fail the class.” = Must izriče snažniju obavezu.
