Introduction
Les adverbes [adverbs] servent à modifier la phrase, la proposition ou plusieurs éléments de la proposition. Ils fournissent un large éventail d’informations.
Les adverbes d’intensité [adverbs of degree] apportent des informations sur l’intensité d’une action ou d’un adjectif. {Voir les adverbes d’intensité, niveau A1}
Les adverbes d’intensification [intensifiers] et d’atténuation [mitigators] sont des adverbes d’intensité.

Les plus couramment utilisés sont : absolutely, highly, incredibly, particularly, so, utterly…
Les adverbes d’atténuation
Les plus couramment utilisés sont : fairly, pretty (informal), rather, slightly…
Example
Les adverbes d’intensification
- It is absolutely impossible to win at most carnival games.
- The climate was highly dry.
- We came incredibly close to falling off the stairs.
- These drawings are particularly good.
- He was so helpful.
- The view is utterly beautiful.
Les adverbes d’atténuation
- These crystals are fairly bright.
- The view was pretty good, but not breathtaking.
- I’m rather bored.
- It is slightly expensive, but I’m still going to buy it.
Use
On utilise les adverbes d’intensification pour renforcer l’intensité d’une expression.
On utilise les adverbes d’atténuation pour diminuer l’intensité d’une expression.
Summary
Les adverbes d’intensification [intensifiers] et d’atténuation [mitigators] sont des adverbes d’intensité. On utilise les adverbes d’intensification pour renforcer un mot ou une expression, et ceux d’atténuation pour affaiblir un mot ou une expression.
Les adverbes d’intensification les plus courants sont : absolutely, highly, incredibly, particularly, so, utterly…
Les adverbes d’atténuation les plus courants : fairly, pretty, rather, slightly…
Par exemple :
— « I am absolutely sure he is lying. » = Il y a de grandes chances qu’il mente, donc on utilise un adverbe d’intensification.
— « I am fairly sure that he is lying. » = Il est peu probable qu’il mente, donc on utilise un adverbe d’atténuation.
