Les verbes suivis d’un gérondif ou d’un infinitif

Introduction

Certains verbes doivent être suivis d’un gérondif ou d’un infinitif.

Form

Certains verbes s’accompagnent d’un gérondif et d’autres d’un infinitif. Il n’y a pas de règle pour les distinguer, il faut donc les apprendre par cœur.

Les verbes suivis du gérondif (verbe utilisé comme nom) ou de l’infinitif (to + base verbale) ont les structures suivantes :

  • verbe + gérondif [verbe + -ing]. Les plus courants sont : admit, avoid, celebrate, dislike, give up, miss, suggest, tolerate…
  • verbe + infinitif [to + verbe]. Les plus courants sont : agree, care, decide, hope, manage, pretend, seem, wait…

Example

Verbe + gérondif

  • They admitted having separated.
  • He avoided saying his nationality.
  • She celebrated passing her driving test.

Verbe + infinitif

  • We agreed to pay for the end of the year party.
  • She just doesn’t care to be present at the birth.
  • I decided to travel for a year.

Use

La structure verbe + gérondif/infinitif s’emploie quand on veut faire suivre un verbe par une autre action.

NOTE : Certains verbes peuvent être suivis par le gérondif et l’infinitif, mais le sens de la phrase change.

Certains verbes doivent être suivis par un gérondif [gerund] (verbe utilisé comme nom) ou un infinitif [infinitive] (to + verbe). Il n’existe aucune règle à ce sujet, il faut donc les apprendre par cœur.

  • Les verbes suivis d’un gérondif les plus utilisés sont : admit, avoid, celebrate, dislike, give up, miss, suggest, tolerate…
  • Les verbes suivis d’un infinitif les plus utilisés sont : agree, care, decide, hope, manage, pretend, seem, wait…

Par exemple :

— « I admit loving you. » = Le verbe admit est suivi d’un gérondif.
— « I decided to marry him. » = Le verbe decide est suivi d’un infinitif.

NOTE : Dans certaines situations, le sens change selon que le verbe est suivi d’un gérondif ou d’un infinitif.
