Introduction
Les pronoms [pronouns] sont des mots qui servent à éviter la répétition d’un nom.
Les pronoms indéfinis [indefinite pronouns] ne renvoient pas à une personne, un objet ou une quantité en particulier.
Something renvoie à une quantité indéterminée d’objets et nothing renvoie à l’absence d’objet.
Form
Something peut être sujet et objet d’une phrase ou d’une question. Il s’emploie dans les phrases affirmatives au singulier.
Verbe/auxiliaire + something + …
Something + verbe/auxiliaire + …
Nothing peut être sujet et objet d’une phrase ou d’une question. Comme il a déjà un sens négatif, on ne peut pas l’employer dans les phrases négatives.
Verbe/auxiliaire + nothing + …
Nothing + verbe + …
Example
Something
- I need something to clean the microwave.
- Something smells terrible in the kitchen.
Nothing
- There is nothing in the dishwasher.
- Right now, nothing is in a good state.
Use
On utilise les pronoms indéfinis pour parler de personnes, d’objets ou de quantités indéterminés.
- Something renvoie à un objet indéfini ;
- Nothing exprime l’absence d’objet.

Les pronoms indéfinis [indefinite pronouns] ne renvoient pas à une personne, un objet ou une quantité en particulier.
Le pronom indéfini something s’emploie pour parler d’un objet non spécifique ou d’une quantité indéterminée. Le pronom indéfini something se place avant ou après le verbe ou auxiliaire.
Le pronom indéfini nothing renvoie à l’absence d’objet. Il se place avant ou après le verbe ou auxiliaire.
Par exemple :
— « There is something in the fridge. » = Something indique la présence d’au moins un objet dans le frigo.
— « There is nothing in the fridge. » = Nothing indique l’absence d’objet.
