Introduction
Zarflar [Adverbs] tümcedeki diğer ögeleri niteleyen ifadeler olarak görev alırlar. Geniş çapta bilgi sunarlar. Derecelendirme Zarfları [Adverbs of degree] bazı durumlarda kelimeleri veya ifadeleri vurgulamak için; bazen de vurgunun derecesini azaltmak için kullanılırlar.
Yukarıda verilen ilk amaç için Intensifiers; ikinci amaç için Mitigators kullanılır.
Form
Intensifiers
En çok kullanılanlar: highly, absolutely, so, utterly, incredibly, particularly…
Mitigators
En çok kullanılanlar: fairly, pretty (informal), rather, slightly…

Example
Intensifiers
- The climate was highly dry.
- It is absolutely impossible to win at most carnival games.
- He was so helpful.
- The view is utterly beautiful.
- We came incredibly close to falling off the stairs.
- These drawings are particularly good.
Mitigators
- These crystals are fairly bright.
- The view was pretty good, but not breathtaking.
- I’m rather bored.
- It is slightly expensive, but I’m still going to buy it.
Use
Intensifiers kelimeleri ve ifadeleri daha güçlü yapılmak istendiğinde kullanılır.
Mitigators kelimeleri ve ifadeleri daha zayıf yapılmak istendiğinde kullanılır.
Summary
Intensifiers; ikinci amaç için Mitigators iki farklı derecelendirme zarfıdır. Bazı durumlarda kelimeleri veya ifadeleri vurgulamak için; bazen de vurgunun derecesini azaltmak için kullanılırlar.
En çok kullanılan Intensifiers şunlardır: highly, absolutely, so, incredibly, utterly, particularly…
En çok kullanılan Mitigators şunlardır: fairly, pretty, rather, slightly…
Örnek:
— “I am absolutely sure he is lying.” = Yalan söylediğine dair güçlü bir ihtimal olduğu için intensifier kullanılmış.
— “I am fairly sure that he is lying.” = Yalan söylediğine dair güçlü bir ihtimal olduğu için mitigator kullanılmış.
