Introduction

Past Continuous або Progressive -це час, який вживається для вираження ситуацій ,які трапилися в минулому і відбувалися в будь-який момент протягом певного періоду.

При вираженні у Запитальній формі, вживається для утворення питань про речі, які відбулися у минулому.

Form

Past Continuous або Progressive дієслова to work у Запитальній формі має таку структуру:
Was/Were + subject + [verb + -ing] + …?

Was/Were Subject Verb + -ing Question
Mark
Was I working …?
Were you working …?
Was he/she/it working …?
Were we/you/they working …?

Example

довша дія перервана коротшою

  • Was I running in the park when you sent me that message?
  • Was she practising sport when I called her?
  • Were they watching TV when she got back from work?

подія, яка сталася у точний час у минулому

  • Was I running in the park at 9 o’clock?
  • Was she practising sport when I called her at 11:45?
  • Were they still watching TV when she returned from work at 7 o’clock?

безперервна дія, яка відбувалася тривалий час

  • Was I running?
  • Was he crossing the road?
  • Were we watching TV during our break?

тривалість певного періоду часу у минулому

  • Was I working in the bakery on the opposite road last summer?
  • Was she practising sport every day last year to prepare for the race?
  • Were they watching TV all day when they were teenagers?

минулі одночасні дії

  • Was I running while she was walking?
  • Was she practising sport while her mother was cooking?
  • Were we talking while the kids were watching TV?

послідовність дій, які відбулися у минулому

  • Were the kids playing on the grass, their parents sitting on the fence and teenagers running when you went to the park?
  • Was her mother working on the laptop, her father watching TV and her sister studying when she went home?
  • Were the patients reading magazines, talking on the phone and was the secretary typing anything on the computer while you were waiting at the doctor today?

  • Was I always going late to class?
  • Was she doing sport everyday for years to become a good athlete?
  • Were they always watching TV on high volume late at night?

Use

Вживається Past Continuous для вираження подій або діяльностей, які відбувалися у минулому. Зазвичай ми хочемо показати, що дії тривали протягом певного часу.
Past Continuous вживається у таких випадках:

  1. довша дія перервана неочікуваною коротшою (щось раптово стається поки інша довша подія вже відбувалася);
  2. подія, яка відбувалася у точний час у минулому (подія, яка відбувалася у точний час у минулому (виражаючи дату, годину або надану певну часову інформацію про подію, яка відбувалася у минулому);
  3. безперервна дія, яка відбувалася (подія відбувалася у минулому протягом тривалого періоду часу);
  4. тривалість певного періоду часу у минулому (подія відбувалася у минулому протягом тривалого часу);
  5. минулі одночасні дії (щось відбувається у той самий час з іншою дією);
  6. послідовність дій, які відбувалися у минулому (як правило вживається для опису ситуації у котрій різні події відбуваються у той самий час);
  7. повторювана або набридлива дія (із виразом always або схожі вирази які висловлюють ідею повторюваної події).

Summary

Вживається Past Continuous коли ми хочемо виразити ситуації, які відбулися у минулому і відбуваються кожного разу протягом певного періоду часу. При вживанні у Запитальній формі, можна вжити його для утворення питань про речі, які відбувалися у минулому.

Past Continuous у Запитальній формі має таку структуру:
Was/Were + subject + [verb + -ing] + …? (e.g. Was I playing?).

Наприклад:
—“Was I playing football when the phone rang?” = Вживається Past Continuous для того щоб запитати про безперервну ситуацію? яка відбувалася протягом певного часу.
— “Did I play football?” = У цьому випадку, вживаючи Past Simple, ми запитуємо про дію? яка почалася і закінчилася у минулому.
